Suspected Burglar Falls Twice While Running From Homeowner

Centennial, Colo -- Arapahoe County authorities say a 22-year-old man suffered serious head injuries Wednesday morning when he tried to run away from homeowner with a gun.

Kris Gibson was taken to a hospital for treatment and then taken to jail.

Authorities say Gibson broke into a home at Olathe Street and East Maplewood Avenue at about 4:30 a.m.

The homeowner -- whose name hasn't been released -- said a noise woke him up and when he went to check it out, he saw someone downstairs. He grabbed his rifle and ran after the man.

"The suspect ran from the house. The homeowner pursued him outside the residence. The homeowner fired a shot into the ground in an attempt to keep the person here," said Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson.

While trying to run away, the suspect fell twice. Gibson struck his head on the floor while running down the stairs in the house and fell again on an icy driveway outside the house. He left a bloody trail and was found lying down in a field a short distance away.

Gibson was treated and released from the hospital and jailed for investigation of burglary and theft charges.

The jewelry belonging to the family was found outside the home where Gibson was last seen trying to flee. The family was quite shaken up and terrified about the incident, authorities said.

Man Survives Mountain Plunge, Gets Arrested

Ouray, Colo. -- A Clifton man has been jailed in Montrose County for suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs after surviving a plunge off Red Mountain Pass with only a slight concussion.

The Colorado State Patrol says 35-year-old George O'Dell Hill was driving on U.S. 550 earlier this week when his car went over the edge of the road near Ouray and plunged more than 420 feet down a steep snow-slide chute. Trooper Don Brown says Hill apparently jumped out of the car as it went over the side.

Brown says Hill told police he fell asleep at the wheel, but investigators say it appeared Hill had been using methamphetamine. He says Hill refused drug tests.

After the crash, Hill was able to crawl back up to the roadway and was found by a state transportation worker.

The crash was almost in the same spot as a wreck in February where six people suffered only minor injuries when their van went over the side of the road and rolled several times as it plunged to the river below.

Man Accused Of Chasing Police With Tractor

Des Moines, Iowa -- A Manilla man is accused of chasing Crawford County deputies with his tractor.

Police said a Taser gun was used on Daniel Hinners and he was arrested Tuesday night.

The deputies were responding to a domestic abuse call at Hinners' home when he started chasing them on a large farm tractor.

Hinners exited the tractor after deputies fired several shots at the tires.

Hinners was charged with assault on a peace officer and domestic abuse assault.

Golf-cart driving teen charged with DUI

An intoxicated juvenile was arrested just after midnight Thursday when he was stopped driving a wrong-way golf cart without headlights on Ga. 54, Peachtree City police said.

The 15-year-old boy is charged with driving a golf cart on a highway, resisting an officer and DUI.

His passenger, Letitia Garza, 36, of Peachtree City, was picked up on an outstanding Fayette County warrant for violation of probation and was charged with resisting an officer.

Additional charges are pending.

Drunk toddler found, babysitter charged

A 37-year-old man was charged with child endangerment after one of two toddlers he was baby-sitting was found drunk, authorities said.

Suffolk County sheriff's deputies investigating a family court case peered through the window of a Patchogue home Tuesday and saw Juan Reyes passed out with the children wandering around the house.

They managed to rouse Reyes, who was the only adult at home with the two toddlers, ages 2 and 3, according to the sheriff's office. The deputies said Reyes appeared extremely intoxicated.

The deputies also noticed the 2-year-old was having difficulty standing, had bloodshot eyes, smelled of alcohol and was lethargic.

The toddler was taken to the hospital, where tests revealed he was legally intoxicated, with a blood-alcohol content of 0.094 percent, the sheriff's office said. In New York, a driver is considered drunk with an alcohol content of 0.08 percent or greater.

The second child was taken into the custody of Child Protective Services.

At the time, the children's parents were at a hospital, where the mother was giving birth.

Reyes was arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Central Islip and ordered held on $5,000 bail. He was scheduled to return to court on January 3.

Robert Clifford, spokesman for the Suffolk County district attorney, said the children's family lives at the house where the toddlers were found. Reyes also gave that as his address during his arraignment.

The district attorney's office said Reyes was being represented by the Legal Aid Society. Calls to the society went unanswered Wednesday evening.

A man and his three kids pulled into a Roswell Road gas station. The dad left the kids in the car as he went inside. Two kids followed him inside. The third child remained in the car. The car was left running.

A man walked up to the car and got in. He turned to the child and told her to get out, which she did. She went in the store and told her father what was going on. He chased the car and managed to get the passenger door open, but the car then sped away.

The car was last seen on Belle Isle Road.

Take the keys out of the car anytime you park it, especially at a business.


These bad guys not exactly MIT grads

Two men forced an employee back into a Roswell Road restaurant after the employee opened the rear door to take garbage out.

The armed men told the employees to do what they told them. Unfortunately for the bad guys, they did not tell the victims what to do, so the victims just kind of tried to look busy.

The two bad guys then decided to charge into the dining area and wave their pistols at everyone, but there weren’t too many people there to wave at.

They couldn’t find anyone with any money and, as the witnesses reported, they couldn’t even find the office of the restaurant. They ran around a little while longer and then ran outside and got into a burgundy Toyota Camry.

To the surprise of everyone who witnessed the robbery, they managed to drive away without hitting anything.

Lucella Bridget Gorman, 38, of Banyo, Qld., Australia, was arrested for stealing fruit, chocolate, Barbie dolls, toys, batteries, electronics, beauty products and earrings. After her arrest, police took her mug shot with a digital camera; when the booking officer turned his back for a moment, she swiped the camera, too, which was then recovered from her bag. She pleaded guilty to several theft charges. Her motive? "I didn't have enough money for Christmas and I thought that would be an easy way of getting things" for her gift recipients, she told the court.

Fake Money Stolen From Thai Bank

Three teenage robbers in Thailand have been arrested after a sharp-eyed street vendor noticed they were trying to spend fake money — that had been stolen from a bank — police said.

The two 15-year-old boys and a 16-year-old girl broke into the Siam Commercial Bank in the seaside resort of Pattaya early Monday, making off with a bundle of notes and mobile telephones, said police Maj. Sutham Chaosithong.

But the teens' haul also included a stack of fake bank notes, Sutham said.

Branch manager Kitiphol Kramwong said the bank had detected 30 fake notes in the past week, marked them as such, and left them in an easy-to-access drawer — which robbers had pilfered. It was not clear whether they realized they had stolen fake money.

While police were inspecting the scene of the crime, they were told that vendors at a nearby market had caught the three teenagers trying to buy goods with forged money, Sutham said Tuesday.

The young suspects have since been detained at a social welfare detention center pending a juvenile court ruling on the case, he said.

Pattaya, 110 kilometers (70 miles) southeast of Bangkok, is a beach town popular with Thai and foreign tourists.

Former Major Leaguer Jeff Reardon Arrested

Jeff Reardon is sixth on the all-time saves list.

Former major league pitcher Jeff Reardon was charged with a jewelry store robbery and held pending a bond hearing Tuesday.

The 50-year-old Reardon walked into Hamilton Jewelers at the Gardens Mall on Monday and handed an employee a note saying he had a gun and the store was being robbed, according to Palm Beach Gardens police.

Reardon fled the store with an undisclosed amount of cash. Police found him at a nearby restaurant, recovered the stolen money and charged him with armed robbery.

The four-time All-Star was 73-77 with 367 saves and a 3.16 ERA in 16 seasons with the New York Mets, Montreal Expos, Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds and New York Yankees.

Mother Accidentally Runs Over Daughter

A woman backing out of a driveway to get Christmas candy accidentally ran over her 6-year-old daughter and killed her, police said.

Cordelia Quistorf, 24, did not realize the girl had gone outside, police said.

Quistorf's other daughter and two sons were in the car with her.

Detective Ed Worthman said no charges were expected.

Police say Missouri woman swallowed cell phone whole to end fight

A lovers' dispute over a cell phone ended suddenly when the woman swallowed the phone whole, police said.

Police said they received a call at 4:52 a.m. Friday from a Blue Springs man who said his girlfriend was having trouble breathing. When they arrived at the house they found the 24-year-old woman had a cell phone lodged in her throat.

"He wanted the phone and she wouldn't give it to him, so she attempted to swallow it," Detective Sgt. Steve Decker of the Blue Springs Police Department. "She just put the entire phone in her mouth so he couldn't get it."

Police said an ambulance transported the woman to St. Mary's Medical Center in Blue Springs. A hospital spokeswoman said she couldn't give details about the woman's health since police have not released her identity.

Divorced dad admits poisoning kids

Jim Junior Nice was charged with three counts of murder in the poisoning deaths of his children.

A man accused of using poison to kill his three young children told police he "didn't want the kids to suffer through the divorce," according to court papers.

Jim Junior Nice, 33, was charged Thursday with three counts of first-degree murder. He was ordered held without bail pending a preliminary hearing.

Nice admitted the killings after he was taken into custody, and "appeared despondent over his recent divorce," according to a police affidavit.

He also told police he had taken medications in an attempt to kill himself, the affidavit said.

An after-hours call Thursday to his attorney's office was not returned.

Fatally poisoned were 6-year-old twins, Justin and Spencer, and a 2-year-old girl, Raquel Anna.

Divorce records show Jim and Leslie Nice lost custody of the children after the 2004 drowning death of a fourth child, 22-month-old Ian Nice, in a ditch at a local park.

The children were placed in the custody of their grandparents for nine months.

After the couple divorced earlier this year, they shared custody of the children.

Police discovered the children's bodies Wednesday morning, after someone called the department to request that officers check on Jim Nice, who had failed to show up for work.

Nice answered the door when the officers knocked. When asked if he was OK, the man "hung his head, put his hand over his mouth, and shook his head no and replied, 'No I'm not,"' the affidavit said.

Nice opened the door wider, fell to the ground and began mumbling. Officers then spotted the three bodies lying on the living room floor.

Accused drunken driver steals police car

A Florida man arrested Saturday for alleged drunken driving slipped off his handcuffs, slid into the driver's seat of a police car and sped off, police said. He was captured a short time later.

Just before the incident, Thomas Elflein, 26, was spotted trying to avoid a DWI checkpoint by pulling into a gas station around 12:30 a.m., said Suffolk County Police Detective Sgt. William Lamb.

Officers handcuffed him and put him in the back of a marked police car, Lamb said. But while an officer was outside recording license information, Elflein pulled off the handcuffs, got into the driver's seat and drove away, Lamb said. He said Elflein eventually abandoned the police car and was tracked down by search dogs.

Elflein, of Deltona, Florida, was charged with third-degree grand larceny, resisting arrest, third-degree escape, driving while intoxicated and aggravated unlicensed operation.

He was to be arraigned in district court in Central Islip, on Long Island.

Tigers Kill Suspect at South African Zoo

A suspected mugger being chased by security guards met a grisly end after he fled into a zoo and climbed into the tiger enclosure.

His mauled body was discovered Sunday by a visitor to the zoo in this central Southern African city, prompting initial confusion as to how the man ended up in the enclosure.

Police said Wednesday the man and an accomplice had robbed a couple at knifepoint early Sunday. Security guards gave chase and one of the suspects jumped over the perimeter fence. He then apparently ran to the tiger's den in the middle of the zoo.

"What exactly happened we don't know and we won't ever know because the only person who could tell us is dead," police spokeswoman Else Gerber said.

She said there was an empty can of beer near the corpse and that the autopsy would reveal whether the man was intoxicated at the time.

Zoo officials have said the Bengal tigers will not be destroyed because they were blameless. The tigers had been fed on Saturday and so did not eat the man because they were not hungry, according to media reports.

Girl, 4, hurt in Wal-Mart shooting

Two brothers who allegedly went to a Wal-Mart to steal were charged in a shooting at the crowded store that seriously wounded two bystanders.

Vincent Cantone, 24, was apprehended at the store after the melee Tuesday in this town about 30 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border.

His brother, Andrew Cantone, 19, was arrested about an hour later at his home south of Deming, Police Chief Michael Carillo told reporters. Investigators initially thought a third man might have been involved but said later he was a witness and dropped a search for him, the chief said.

Investigators believe the brothers went to the store planning to steal either DVDs or CDs, Carillo said. As soon as they left, employees brought them back inside, where a confrontation ensued and Vincent Cantone allegedly opened fire with a .32-caliber handgun, Carillo said.

Wal-Mart customer Linda Hack said she was shopping when she heard at least two pops.

"I didn't know they were shots," she said. She said she and a horde of other customers fled toward the back of the store.

The store was evacuated after the shooting but reopened Wednesday.

A Wal-Mart employee and a 4-year-old girl remained hospitalized Wednesday in "stable but very guarded" condition, Carillo said. A third person suffered minor injuries in a scuffle with at least one of the suspects at the store, police Lt. James Wycoff said.

The child, Serena Carrizosa, was shot in her side and a store manager, Sergio Jimenez, 28, was shot in the upper chest and hand, Carillo said.

Vincent Cantone was charged with attempted murder, child abuse, aggravated battery, shoplifting and weapons violations. His brother was charged with tampering with evidence, shoplifting and conspiracy to commit shoplifting.

It was the second outburst of violence at a Wal-Mart store in New Mexico in recent months. In August, one man was killed and another injured in an apparent domestic dispute inside a store in Albuquerque.

Letterman lawyers fight restraining order

Attorneys for television talk show host David Letterman want a judge to quash a restraining order granted to a Santa Fe woman who contends the celebrity used code words to show that he wanted to marry her and train her as his co-host.

A state judge granted a temporary restraining order to Colleen Nestler, who alleged in a request filed last Thursday that Letterman has forced her to go bankrupt and caused her "mental cruelty" and "sleep deprivation" since May 1994.

Nestler requested that Letterman, who tapes his show in New York, stay at least three yards away and not "think of me, and release me from his mental harassment and hammering."

Attorneys for Letterman, in a motion filed Tuesday, contend the order is without merit and asked state District Judge Daniel Sanchez to quash it.

"Celebrities deserve protection of their reputation and legal rights when the occasional fan becomes dangerous or deluded," Albuquerque attorney Pat Rogers wrote in the motion.

Nestler told The Associated Press by telephone Wednesday that she had no comment pending her request for a permanent restraining order "and I pray to God I get it."

Sanchez set a Jan. 12 hearing on the permanent order.

Letterman's longtime Los Angeles attorney, Jim Jackoway, said Nestler's claims were "obviously absurd and frivolous."

"This constitutes an unfortunate abuse of the judicial process," he said.

Nestler's application for a restraining order was accompanied by a six-page typed letter in which she said Letterman used code words, gestures and "eye expressions" to convey his desires for her.

She wrote that she began sending Letterman "thoughts of love" after his show began in 1993, and that he responded in code words and gestures, asking her to come East.

She said he asked her to be his wife during a televised "teaser" for his show by saying, "Marry me, Oprah." Her letter said Oprah was the first of many code names for her, and that the coded vocabulary increased and changed with time.

Her letter does not say why she recently sought a restraining order.

Rogers' motion to quash the order contends the court lacks jurisdiction over Letterman, that Nestler never served him with restraining order papers and that she didn't meet other procedural requirements.

An anonymous gift-giver left a $15,000 diamond engagement ring to the owner of an unlocked car in western Massachusetts with a typed note hinting at a broken heart.

"Merry Christmas. Thank you for leaving your car door unlocked. Instead of stealing your car I gave you a present. Hopefully this will land in the hands of someone you love, for my love is gone now. Merry Christmas to you," the note said.

The three-diamond ring with a white-gold band appeared on the seat of the man's car at a train station in Westborough, about 30 miles west of Boston, on December 7, police said. Four days later, the man reported it to police.

"This appears to be random," said Westborough Police Lt. Paul Donnelly. "I think there was a search for a car that was unlocked."

The 37-year-old man decided to keep the ring after a jeweler appraised its value at $15,000, police said.

Man Dates Gal On Internet For Six Months -- And It Turns Out She's His Mother!

Marseilles, France - Skirt-chasing playboy Daniel Anceneaux spent weeks talking with a sensual woman on the Internet before arranging a romantic rendezvous at a remote beach -- and discovering that his on-line sweetie of six months was his own mother!

"I walked out on that dark beach thinking I was going to hook up with the girl of my dreams," the rattled bachelor later admitted. "And there she was, wearing white shorts and a pink tank top, just like she'd said she would.

"But when I got close, she turned around -- and we both got the shock of our lives. I mean, I didn't know what to say. All I could think was, 'Oh my God! it's Mama!' "

But the worst was yet to come. Just as the mortified mother and son realized the error of their ways, a patrolman passed by and cited them for visiting a restricted beach after dark.

The girl-crazy X-ray technician said he began flirting with normally straitlaced Nicole -- who lives six miles away in a Marseilles suburb -- while scouring the Internet for young ladies to put a little pizzazz in his life.

"Mom called herself Sweet Juliette and I called myself The Prince of Pleasure, and unfortunately, neither one of us had any idea who the other was," said flabbergasted Daniel.

"The conversations even got a little racy a couple of times.

"But I really started to fall for her, because there seemed to be a sensitive side that you don't see in many girls.

"She sent me poems she had written and told me about her dreams and desires, and it was really very romantic.

"The truth is, I got to see a side of my mom I'd never seen before. I'm grateful for that."

When starry-eyed Daniel asked Sweet Juliette to send him a picture, Nicole e-mailed him a photo of a curvy, half-clad cutie she'd scanned from a men's magazine.

"The girl in the picture was so beautiful, I begged Juliette to meet me on the beach -- and Mom said yes," he recalled. "Mom says she was falling for me, too, and she just wanted to meet me, even though she knew I'd be disappointed when I saw her.

"As for me, I figured I was going to find the girl of my dreams.

"I guess that's about as wrong as I've ever been."

Daniel admits he and his mother could do little but stammer and stutter around each other for days after their cyberspace exploits came to light. And his father Paul -- Nicole's husband of 27 years -- wasn't too happy when the story hit the news and his beer-drinking buddies made him the butt of their jokes.

"Dad was ticked for a while and he forbid Mom to talk to anybody on the Internet ever again," said embarrassed Daniel.

Man faces 50 years for sex with bride, 14

A 22-year-old man faces up to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty Tuesday to sexual assault charges filed after he impregnated and then married a 14-year-old girl.

Matthew Koso legally married the girl in Kansas after she became pregnant. The girl, 14-year-old Crystal Koso, gave birth August 24 to a girl, Samara.

Sentencing was set for February 7.

The case generated international media attention when Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning filed first-degree sexual assault charges against Koso in July. Koso's trial was scheduled to begin Thursday.

Bruning said that Koso is a friend of the girl's half brother and began a relationship with her when she was 12.

Nebraska requires people to be at least 17 before they can marry. State law also prohibits people 19 or older from having sex with those under the age of 16.

After the girl became pregnant, her mother gave permission for Koso to take her daughter across the state line to Hiawatha, Kansas. There is no minimum age for marriage in Kansas, but state law requires anyone under 18 wanting to marry to have permission of both parents or a guardian. If there's no parent or guardian, permission from a judge is required.

Koso's lawyer, Willis Yoesil, has said that the girl's mother and Koso's parents approved of the marriage. The girl's father has not lived with the family for some time.

Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius recently said she was asking legislators to establish a strict ban on marriage involving anyone younger than 16.

The governor said the legislation also should retain the requirement for parental or judicial consent for those age 16 or 17.

Man Accused Of Holding Dog For Ransom

A Wisconsin man is in trouble after police say he held a dog for ransom.

Police said the man took the dog, named Queenie, from a La Crosse church last week while the owner was decorating inside.

The dog's owner put an ad in the paper offering a $200 reward for Queenie.

That is when the suspect called and instead, said he wanted $450.

They met to return the dog and police arrested the suspected dognapper.

The suspect's defense was that his girlfriend bought the dog, and he only asked for more money to cover her costs.

Pregnant Skydiver Survives Face-First Fall

Shayna Richardson was making her first solo skydiving jump when she had trouble with her parachutes and, while falling at about 50 mph, hit face first in a parking lot.

Although badly hurt, she survived — and doctors treating her injuries discovered she was pregnant. Four surgeries and two months later, Richardson said she and the fetus are doing fine.

"Just this last week we went and saw the doctor and we've got arms, we've got legs. We've got a full face. The baby is moving around just fine. The heart rate looks good. So not only did God save me but he spared this baby," she said.

Richardson, 21, of Joplin, Mo., was skydiving in Siloam Springs on Oct. 9 when her main parachute failed.

"I heard a snap and I started spinning and I didn't know why. I didn't know what to do to fix it. I didn't know how to make it stop," Richardson told Fort Smith, Ark., television station KFSM.

She cut away her primary chute so her reserve could deploy, but it didn't open all the way. She spun out of control, heading straight for the asphalt below.

"At the end I said, 'I'm going to die. I'm going to hit the ground. I'm going to die,'" she said. "I don't remember it. I don't remember hitting the ground. I don't remember the impact or anything that came with it."

Rescuers got her to a hospital in Fayetteville, where Richardson underwent surgery. She broke her pelvis in two places, broke her leg, lost six teeth and now has 15 steel plates.

"I went into the first surgery where they cut me from ear to ear and they cut my face down and they took out all the fractured egg-shelled bones and put in steel plates," Richardson said.

During treatment, doctors found that Richardson was pregnant, which was a surprise to her. She said she would not have jumped had she known.

"To hit the ground belly first — that's dangerous. I mean at any stage of pregnancy that's dangerous. That's not something you want to do let alone at 50 miles per hour," Richardson said.

Her fall was videotaped and Richardson said she was able to watch it, without qualms.

"I wanted to watch it," said Richardson. "And the whole reason I'm comfortable with watching it because I know how it ends."

Richardson said her due date is June 25. She plans to make her next parachute jump in August.
