Man charged with leaving child at Waffle House
Police accused a DeKalb man of leaving his 5-year-old daughter at a Waffle House in the middle of the night and then concocting a carjacking story to explain his absence.
The child was unharmed.
DeKalb police Officer Herschel Grangent said a customer at the Waffle House on Lawrenceville Highway near I-285 played with the child until police arrived about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Police said the child's father turned up outside a Wal-Mart in Gwinnett County. A DeKalb police statement said 24-year-old Antoine Kelley, who listed an address near North DeKalb Mall, told Gwinnett officers he was carjacked and kidnapped when he stepped outside the Waffle House to go to his vehicle and then was freed in Gwinnett.
But DeKalb police suspect Kelley drove to Gwinnett to engage in a drug deal, Grangent said.
Kelley was jailed on charges of making false statements, cruelty to children and falsely reporting a crime.
